Waterways are in for major changes

CANALS in Middlewich could benefit from a major cash injection if a bid to improve the appearance of the network is accepted.

Middlewich Vision, is in the process of compiling a bid to submit to Rural Recovery to make aesthetic improvements to a 10 mile stretch of the Trent and Mersey canal from Middlewich to Sandbach.

Working with Sandbach Partnership, the vision group wants to encourage the thousands of boat users who pass through the canal network each year to spend more time in Middlewich by making it more attractive and appealing.

Caroline O'Brien, one of the Middlewich Vision coordinators, said there are plans to clear up the area, paint the locks and bridges, add notice boards and signage.

There are also plans to install sculptures and benches along the towpath.

Caroline said: "The bid had to be submitted by January so we've been working really hard at putting it together.

"The majority of the work won't start until next winter when the canal network is quieter, but if it is successful people will get to see the effect in 2006."

Last month a group of 13 people took to canal boats to carry out an inspection of the waterways from Wheelock to Middlewich to identify which areas of the canal need improving.
