Sentence can never replace the loss of Mark's life

THE mother of crash victim Mark Lucas's fiancee said his killer's eight-year sentence would never replace the loss of his life.

Linsey Verdin's mother Sharon Verdin said: "It was not long enough, although I'd say that 100 years would not be enough. What David May has done is he has deprived Mark of a happy future with Linsey and Lily Mai.

"When he comes out he will be able to work and get married and have children. Where is the fairness in that and where will it ever end for Linsey?

"The night on which this happened, David May was drunk and was completely out of order, and for him to say that he hit a lamppost when it was in fact a human being is unbelievable.

"It is an insult to a dead man who was so popular that 500 people attended his funeral."

Recorder of Chester Elgan Edwards told the court that it was difficult to imagine a worse case.

He said: "The defendant has never had a driving licence and was driving with excess alcohol. He lost control of the car, killed somebody and embedded the car into two houses which could have blown up.

"To add to this catalogue of horror, on the night in question the defendant ran off and had no concern except for himself.

"This was a flagrant disregard of the law."

Sentencing May, he told him: "You were drink-driving on a road where you had previously lost control and to add to the tragic death you caused, you drove the vehicle into the living room of a property."
