Force can do better

CHESHIRE Police Authority is one of 26 forces across England and Wales which have failed to fully implement recommended changes to the way they record crime.

The Audit Commission has found that only 17 of 43 authorities have introduced the required changes. The commission gave all the authorities 'traffic light' ratings of green, amber and red.

Cheshire was given an amber rating.

Auditors reviewed crime data in seven categories - disturbance, domestic violence, racial incidents, violent crime, criminal damage, burglary and vehicle crime.

Ch Insp John Turton, operations manager for call management, said: "The Audit Commission's NCRS report is particularly useful for a force like Cheshire.

"We've been investing heavily in our crime recording and reporting systems and these findings help us evaluate what we've done so far and take the necessary considerations when making plans for future."
