Princess Di award goes to Richard

BIG-HEARTED sixth former Richard Speakman has been chosen to receive one of the country's top awards.

Richard is a student at Congleton High School, and is to receive the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for Young People.

The award is being given to the teenager to mark his outstanding contribution to his school.

"Richard has been chosen for the award because of the inspirational qualities that he has demonstrated," said a delighted Les Jones, headteacher at Congleton High School.

"He has given up numerous hours of his own time to support younger children in their studies, and in coping with all aspects of growing up.

"He has really made a difference to the students which he helps, and he is now determined to seek a career in teaching, specialising in helping children with special educational needs."

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award was launched nationwide in April 2000 to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions made by many secondary school students to their schools and communities.

The award is given to those students who have been nominated by their schools for youth participation or volunteering, selfless service to others or for showing outstanding qualities in overcoming adverse circumstances.

"Richard's contribution to Congleton High School is outstanding," added Mr Jones.

"He had dedicated a great deal of his personal time to helping others, and fully deserves the recognition received from the Princess of Wales award.

"I was particularly pleased that this work has led Richard into the teaching profession."
