Crewe crash out

PLAYER-coach Matt Farr was sent off as Crewe and Nantwich RUFC crashed out of the Powergen Junior Vase, last Saturday.

It proved a costly dismissal as Gosworth made their one man advantage pay to edge this Fifth Round clash, 26-17.

Farr walked midway through the first half after an altercation and will feel at least a little hard done to with his opposite receiving just 10 minutes in the sin bin thanks to the Northumberland referee.

It was disappointing after Crewe got off to a great start in the North East.

Danny Lynch gave them the early lead with a penalty but it was short-lived as Gosworth hit back with a converted try and drop goal to lead 13-3.

Crewe's forwards finally began to get into the game and Andy Pemberton crossed the whitewash with Lynch converting to get them right back into it at 13-10.

However Gosworth once again strengthened their position with a drop goal to lead by six points at the break.

A valiant second half performance saw Crewe snatch the lead when Will Brown bagged a try and Lynch converted again to make it 16-17.

And they looked like hanging on to progress but the referee somehow conjured up 15 minutes of injury time and Crewe's 14 men were out on their feet.

Gosworth took advantage with a penalty and a try to put them in the next round of the competition.

Second place in South Lancs/Cheshire Division Two, Crewe will now concentrate on promotion in the second half of the season.

They entertain Birchfield on Saturday, January 8, KO 2.15pm.
