Sandbach lose

SANDBACH RUFC ended a fantastic year on a low note as they crashed 36-3 at Leigh.

The euphoria of winning promotion is now replaced with a dogged determination to consolidate in South Lancs/Cheshire Division One.

And the Bradwall Road boys will have to improve on a disappointing display against the high-fliers who only narrowly beat them earlier this season.

This was a different story as the home side caught Sandbach cold, racing into the lead with three tries.

Finally woken, they managed to stem the flow and launch assaults of their own but just couldn't cross the line.

Leigh took the scoreline beyond Sandbach in the second half and despite a rally in the final 15 minutes, the visitors only manage a penalty consolation from Andy Rollins.

Captain Ray Jones was disappointed.

"The conditions were terrible but the same for both sides," he explained.

"We came out really cold and didn't look up for it at the beginning.

"It was well below par, the backs were poor and the forwards just about held their own.

"We've got to improve.

"We've got a couple of weeks break now and we've got everyone back.

"Hopefully we can take advantage with some decent training sessions and work on a few things."

Sandbach return to action at home to Wirral on Saturday, January 8.
