Booze band planned for three recreation areas

A BOOZE ban in three areas of Crewe looks set to go ahead today in an effort to tackle anti-social behaviour in the town.

A borough council cabinet meeting this afternoon looks set to prohibit alcohol consumption at Queen's Park, King George V Playing Fields and at Tipkinder Park.

Two orders have already been made in Crewe - in the cemetery grounds and Jubilee Gardens.

Police believe a further ban at Queens Park and surrounding areas, where drinking has fuelled violence at annual events such as the carnival and bonfire night, would help them clamp down on anti-social behaviour.

A council spokesman said: "The council may make a designation order in respect of an area that it considers has been the subject of nuisance or disorder associated with the drinking of alcohol in the open air.

"Designation of an area enables a police officer to request a person to stop drinking alcohol in that area and to impound any containers of drink, whether opened or sealed.

"The maximum penalty for failure to comply with a request to cease drinking is a fine of £500.

"The police have indicated that incidents of drunken behaviour and other anti-social activities have previously occurred at major events held at Queen's Park and that such activity could be displaced into neighbouring areas.

"The proposal is a positive measure to prevent crime and disorder."

Should the proposals go ahead signs must be erected around the park and notices taken out in the press at a cost of around £2,000.
