Warrington Town 4
Mossley 3
IF Warrington Town's home clash with Colwyn Bay is half as good as their last outing then it will be worth sports fans climbing out of their cosy armchairs on Monday.
Town's meeting with fellow mid-table UniBond League Division One rivals kicks off at Cantilever Park at 3pm.
Manager Glenn Walker may think twice before considering substituting striker Graeme Mitchell in the future. The Town boss was set to bring the front man off only four minutes into the second half of Saturday's incident-packed President's Cup first round tie when he clinically struck to level matters at 1-1.
Mitchell later chipped in the winner, his fifth goal in five outings, and had a potential hat-trick hit ruled out for off side against a team that would not give in despite being reduced to 10 men.
Mossley even came within a whisker of forcing gruelling extra time in the Cantilever Park mud as Rhodri Giggs, the younger brother of Manchester United superstar Ryan, glanced a header across goal in the 89th minute.
Mitchell's strikes made amends for the amount of good build-up work he had spoilt earlier in the game by often being caught off side.
Walker said: "Both front men got a roasting at half-time but they responded well."
For his second goal, Mitchell followed fellow striker Mike Heverin's flick-on and nonchalantly dinked the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
His first effort was stunning too as he trapped Dave Tickle's pass and lost his marker with a brilliant turn.
Town were already on top when dangerous Mossley winger Adam Morning was sent off in the 56th minute for swearing at a linesman.
Two Steve Latham goals in four minutes then put Town into cruise mode. The midfielder's second was a wonderful blast from 25 yards.
But the game was far from over as three more goals in five minutes proved.
A deflected drive from Mossley striker Mario Daniel handed him his second of three goals to put the visitors back in the hunt.
Mitchell's strike to put Town 4-2 ahead should have sealed it but four minutes from time Daniel's low 25-yard shot skidded under the arms of Town goalkeeper Colin Flood, who, along with skipper Lee Webster, had made a hash of clearing a loose ball that had allowed Daniel to deservedly put the visitors 1-0 ahead in the 16th minute.
Town's eventual win was nothing more than what midfield workhorse Terry Nestor deserved on his return from an ankle injury.
Town: Colin Flood, Iain Dyson, Lee Smith, Terry Nestor, Lee Webster, Paul Clarke, Dave Tickle, Steve Latham, Mike Heverin, Graeme Mitchell, Chris Bermingham. Sub used: Dean Canning. Subs not used: Adrian Reilly, Andy Tague.
