College hails efforts of staff and students

HUNDREDS of students, parents, teachers and governors gathered at Sir John Deane's College to celebrate a range of successes from the past two years.

The annual reunion and presentation evening was held on Monday, December 13, giving students the chance to catch up with old friends after their first taste of university life.

College principal Andrew Jones congratulated students on their achievements and praised them for enriching the college community.

He said: "A sixth form education is about more than A-levels and we wanted our students to take away a great deal more from their time here than certificates, important as those are.

"I would also like to pay tribute to the staff of the college, without whose magnificent efforts little of what we are here to celebrate would be possible.

"The governors have also been closely involved in the work of the college.

"They, too, should be thanked for their support as they carry out this work voluntarily and much of it makes significant demands on their time."

During their two years at the college, the students were involved in a wide range of college activities including college productions, fashion shows, dance evenings, art exhibitions and sporting events.

Members of the student council and charities committee helped raise thousands of pounds for good causes while others took part in valuable community work.

The presentation evening rounded off a great year for the college in which the A-level results of four of the students put each of them in the top five in the country for their particular subjects.

The college itself was placed among the top sixth forms in the country in an Ofsted report this year, which awarded staff and students the highest possible grade of 'outstanding' in five of the six curriculum areas inspected.
