Waging war on waste

CREWE and Nantwich has been given nearly £40,000 to improve recycling in a bid to slow down landfill use.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) issued the cash windfall as part of £5million investment to help local authorities divert waste from landfill and encourage recycling without increasing Council Tax bills.

It is hoped local authorities such as Crewe and Nantwich will be given greater flexibility in deciding how to meet tough waste targets.

Local authorities have been told to increase recycling by 30 per cent by 2005/06 or face massive financial penalties.

In a separate scheme, a three-year targeted waste performance and efficiency grant of £260million has also been announced.

Of that huge amount, Cheshire County Council has received £310, 850.
