THE debate about the War Memorial will rage on despite pronouncements by the leader of the council.
It must be difficult for anyone not having been engaged in a war situation and the comradeship it engenders to understand the depth of feeling it leaves.
As yet, there has not been any concrete reason to remove the memorial to the new site proposed.
No doubt the council officials have drawn the elected members' attention, as they must have a copy like me, to the official guide and Industrial Handbook, issued in the early 1970s on the authority of the council.
This states the following "Of all these improvements which the council has effected, historians will probably record their greatest achievement and the highlight of Crewe's Municipal development of the century from a roundabout for buses flanked by a few shops to an elaborate shopping centre and a large development scheme ...The scheme necessitates the demolition of nearly 200 houses ...Market Terrace, which faced the original town square, which has the town's War Memorial as a centre piece, and was widened to 60 feet to commemorate the 1955 visit of the Queen. It was renamed Queensway".
May I suggest to those who are interested that they visit the proposed site and look at the seats, not to view those who use them, but for what else they contain as it may suggest what may be a bi-product for greater use of the area.
