Objection to memorial move come from as far as Florida

MY NAME is Adrian Peever. I am a native of Crewe, now resident in Florida, USA.

I have just heard of the decision by the council to move Crewe's war memorial.

It seems to me that using a smokescreen of piety for what is a machination motivated by the desire to develop retail space is a new low for this council.

I have read letters from supporters of the move. One suggests that "no mention is made of the Second World War" and "it is dedicated only to 'the men of Crewe', despite the fact that some women's names appear in the roll of the dead".

The first point needs no comment. The second refers to accepted grammatical usage at the time, and seems to reflect a deficient sense of the historicity of the memorial.

If the council wants a "21st century" memorial, it's welcome to put a new one up, and very horrible I'm sure it'll be, but the existing memorial in the heart of our town is both a memorial to our dead and an integral part of our town's history.

If councillor Kent wants to go down in history as one of our town's most notorious villains, it seems he's well on his way.
