Town punished for defensive lapses and lack of creativity

Warrington Town 0

Kidsgrove Athletic 1

WARRINGTON Town fans were forced to endure a frustrating afternoon on Saturday.

Their side battled hard enough but they were sadly lacking in terms of guile and creativity.

They pumped far too many hopeful balls up field and can have no complaints about losing their first game in five UniBond League first division outings.

Kidsgrove, who lost 1-0 to Warrington seven days earlier, posed only a moderate threat in attack but Town were guilty of several lapses in defensive concentration.

Slack marking and slow reactions led to Kidsgrove twice hitting the crossbar and scoring the only goal of the game via Andy Kinsey.

He smashed the ball home from close range after Town had failed to clear their lines from a 68th minute free kick.

Mike Heverin had Town's best effort on goal but his powerful low drive was turned round the post by a masterful save.

Lively strike partner Graeme Mitchell also had chances to score but his shooting was no match for his slick build-up play.

Town: Colin Flood, Lee Smith, Danny Salt, Iain Dyson, Lee Webster, Matty Farrell, Dave Tickle, Steve Latham, Mike Heverin, Graeme Mitchell, Chris Bermingham. Subs used: Dean Canning, Leon Noel. Sub not used: Paul Clarke.

Town play host to Mossley in the first round of the UniBond League's President's Cup on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
