MP vows waste battle will continue

EDDISBURY MP Stephen O'Brien has vowed to continue with his fight against plans to store hazardous waste in Winsford Rock Salt Mine.

Mr O'Brien, shadow Secretary of State for Industry, has spoken of his disappointment following a High Court decision last week to allow the waste to be stored in worked out parts of the mine.

He said: "I have been with local objectors and residents every step of the way in our efforts to stop the proposals to dump toxic waste in the mined out sections of the Winsford Rock Salt Mine from proceeding.

"Unfortunately, this is typical of decisions made by the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott sitting in his ivory tower at Westminster and running roughshod over local people and their objections."

The failed High Court challenge was made by Moulton resident John Kent, who has now pledged to take further legal action.

Mr O'Brien said: "I am disappointed that on this occasion Mr Kent has been unsuccessful in his High Court challenge to the proposals, however, I believe this is only the first step in an ongoing legal challenge.

"If the objectors move forward with their plans to appeal against the decision they will continue to receive my full support."
