Cut the cost of condoms

WINSFORD is among the worst five towns in the UK when it comes to using a condom, according to figures released this week.

The statistics, compiled by Asda, show Winsfordians are less likely to use a condom than people in virtually all other areas.

Simon Cole, from Condom Solutions in Winsford, believes the problem is down to the price and availability of condoms.

He said: "I'm not surprised by the statistics at all because condoms are far too expensive.

"There is a major problem of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases in Winsford and it is because condoms aren't available in places the kids are going to get them.

"How many youngsters are going to go into a family planning centre to get them? Not very many.

"But if we can bring the prices down and get them in places like phone shops for example it would make a huge difference in changing people's mental stance on the issue."

"I don't think it is the case that people in Winsford don't want to use condoms, I think they would just rather take the chance than pay £3 for one packet."

Asda is now planning to 'roll back' the prices on condoms in a bid to increase their use throughout the country.

Tony Page, Asda's non-food director, said: "We are trying to illustrate that protection against sexually transmitted infection is easy, even more affordable and accessible.

"It's everyone's responsibility to look after their own and their partner's sexual well being."
