Witness appeal after car smashed into house wall

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a road traffic collision in which a car smashed into a house in Congleton.

The driver of a white Citroen AX was travelling along Antrobus Street at around 10.20pm on Tuesday when the incident occurred.

It is believed that the driver fled from the scene after the car spun out of control and crashed into the house.

The driver attempted to reverse back into the road and drive away, but was unable to do so due to the damage to the front of the vehicle.

The two residents at the property, a man and woman, were not injured, but fire crews who attended the scene say that the pair were "shocked and shaken".

The house was left with a gaping 3ft wide hole under the main window, and a gas pipe connecting to the property was fractured.

Transco were called out to block the resulting gas leak, and a structural engineer from Congleton Borough Council also carried out a precautionary safety check on the property.

Fire crews also used special absorbents to remove dangerous fluids that leaked into the road as a result of the crash.

Sgt Blair Wilson said: "We believe that the driver fled from the scene after the incident, and are very keen to trace him.

"We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or knows the identity of the driver to get in touch with us."

Members of the public with information can call Sgt Wilson on 01244 612594.
