A lesson in parking etiquette at school

PARENTS of Winwick school children are being urged to think before they park after a wheelchair user was trapped in the car park.

The problem arises during school rush hour at Winwick CE Primary School, when parents park their cars down the leisure centre driveway and on Myddleton Lane's pavement.

Clr Pam Barrow told November's parish council meeting that a wheelchair user was stranded in the car park because his path out of the leisure centre driveway was blocked by cars.

His wife had pushed him through the park because other cars on Myddleton Lane were blocking the pavement and she did not want to take him onto the road.

She had been forced to leave him in the park while she went to the Spar shop.

Les Higgins, council clerk, will be writing to Winwick Primary School to ask that parents be reminded of the problem.

Mr Higgins said: "The head teacher has already written to parents but so far it's not done any good.

"Unfortunately, parents seem to think they can park anywhere when they drop their children off. We've asked the police to issue tickets but it doesn't seem to have done any good.

"They are not being good neighbours.

"People who block the road should really think about the problems they are causing for those in wheelchairs or pushing prams."

Clr Barrow said that markings on the leisure centre driveway may be needed to remind parents that there is an entrance which needs to be kept clear.

She said: "People may think they are parking by the side of the school field because there is nothing to indicate it is an entrance. Not everyone who goes to Winwick Primary School lives in the village."
