Sports complex is under starters orders

BUILDING work is under way on the first stage of a redevelopment at a Winsford sports complex that will provide activities for the whole community.

Lights were erected this week around the running track at Knights Grange Sports Complex which will enable athletes to train all year round.

Winsford town councillor Brian Hall has a long term vision for the complex which he sees as being at the heart of the town community.

He said: "There is so much going on here already and I am delighted work has now started."

Clr Hall added: "I will make another report to the council in January outlining what I feel should be done at the complex."

A users' committee has been set up to assess which organisations already using the complex would like to see happen at Knights Grange.

Vale Royal Borough Council has agreed to spend £10,000 at the complex to relay the running track and improve lighting.

But Clr Hall is hopeful that the project will win further funding.

He said: "Once we find out what the people want then we can look towards getting some serious funding for it.

"It is a very exciting time for users of the complex."

Clr Hall also believes the vandalism which has plagued the sports complex will not prove to be a problem in the future.

He said: "It is our aim to get children involved in sport as early as we can because it is quite obvious that if you give them something to do, there is less chance of them vandalising it.

"There will be many older people at the complex who have the experience to guide the younger people along in both their sporting and cultural development.

"This can only be for the good of Winsford."
