Prescott calls for £1.2m refund

JUST days after rejecting plans to build an urban village in Winnington, Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has ordered Cheshire County Council to refund him £1.2million.

It follows a mistake in the calculation of population figures for the 2001 Census, which has led to a recalculation of the 2003/04 Local Government Finance Settlement.

Now the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has told county councils that the readjustment will mean a £25.9million 'clawback'.
