RESIDENTS in mid Cheshire are being urged to join forces and protect more vulnerable members of the community in the battle against bogus callers.
Police want families and friends to join them in helping protect elderly residents and those that live alone against thieves who call at homes unannounced.
Peter Kenny, Congleton and Vale Royal's crime reduction advisor, said: "There are three types of people who call at your home - family, friends and others.
"Family members can help by providing regular support and advice for their relatives.
"Anyone who you do not know should not be given entry to your home unless it is by prior appointment or if you have a friend or family member with you."
He said people should keep their doors and windows locked at all time, think whether they have an appointment, put the chain on the door and check for an identification card.
If immediate police assistance is required, call 999.
