Guard attacked in raid

DETECTIVES are hunting three men who robbed a cash delivery to a Tesco store in Crewe on Monday afternoon.

The three robbers overpowered the security guard as he left his van to make the delivery and escaped from the Crewe Road store with the box of cash.

They made off in a blue Renault Safrane, which they ditched in an alleyway between Dane Bank Avenue and Summerville Street.

According to witness reports, it is believed they then transferred to a silver Mondeo-type car and sped away from the scene.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "The incident happened between 3.15 and 3.30pm as a cash delivery was being made to Tesco Express at Crewe Road in Wistaston.

"The guard was approached by three men, one of whom stole a cash box containing a quantity of cash."

Leading the investigation, Detective Sergeant Chris Myers of Crewe CID said the robbery had definitely been well planned.

He said: "The guard was attacked physically as he got out of the van and was approaching the store. The three men surrounded him and the cash box was dragged off him.

"He was shocked from the ordeal but was otherwise uninjured.

"At the moment we are following lines of enquiry but are possibly linking it to a similar 'cash in transit' robbery in Hanley which happened a couple of weeks ago.

"We feel that someone may well have witnessed the robbery and would like to hear from anyone who saw the incident or may have seen the men abandon the vehicle in the alleyway."

The three men, two of whom are believed to be white and one believed to be black, are described as all wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with information should call DS Chris Myers on 01244 613333, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
