Conman warning

BURGLARS claiming to be from the water board have struck at the homes of two elderly people in Halton.

In Bridge Street, Runcorn two men tricked their way into the home of an 84-year-old woman by saying they had to turn the water off.

The first crook is described as 5ft 8ins tall, of slim build, with a local accent, aged 24 to 34, of smart appearance and with dark hair.

The second was 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build, aged 24 to 34, with fine, dark hair that was cut short.

In a similar incident in Widnes a lone conman called at the home of an elderly woman who lived on McClellan Place.

Halton's crime reduction advisor, Phil Buckley said: "Even if these people appear genuine, ask them for ID. Ring up the utility they claim to be from and ask them to check the details.

"If you can, call a neighbour and don't let them in until you've checked. If they are genuine, they will not mind waiting."
