Gritting green light

WARRINGTON'S roads will get a care package worth more than £220,000 this winter.

The scheme, to keep the borough's busiest roads free from snow and ice, was given the thumbs up by the executive board on Monday.

Residents were asked to submit the top five roads they would like to see gritted this year.

But only a small number of people returned their questionnaires, so the council has decided to stick with last year's plan.

The main roads to be gritted are principal roads, major commuter routes with three or more bus services in an hour, roads with steep gradients and roads servicing secondary schools, hospitals, ambulance and fire stations.

After several icy days, roads servicing industrial estates, quieter bus routes and roads going to primary schools will then be gritted.
