Dad, 80, and his son beaten and robbed in advert scam

AN-80-year-old man had his false teeth broken when a robber punched him in the face and stole the car he was sitting in.

The pensioner and his son, aged 55, who have not been named but who are both from Great Sankey, had travelled to Bury to buy a second-hand van in response to a newspaper advert.

Shortly after 5pm on Sunday, the men went to a house, on Gigg Lane, Bury, carrying a large amount of cash, having arranged to buy the van from a man they had contacted through the advert.

But when they arrived there was nobody at home, so they decided to wait in their Mitsubishi Shogun car.

The men called the van owner on his mobile. A short time later a dark-coloured Peugeot 206 pulled up with two men inside.

They said they had been sent by the vendor to show them the documents and invited them into the house. The son followed the two men into the house, leaving his father in the car with the money.

When they entered the lounge the men forced him to empty his pockets at knife-point. When he did not produce the cash one of the robbers then left the house and approached his father.

The man removed the ignition key from the car and threatened to stab the frightened pensioner, telling him his son would be shot if he did not hand over the money.

He then punched the pensioner in the face, breaking his false teeth, before forcing him out of the car and stealing it and the cash.

Meanwhile, in the house the pensioner's son seized the opportunity to push the second robber out of the front door before locking it from the inside and leaving the property by the back door.

He ran down the street and called the police from another house.

The attackers were white, in their early 30s and slim. They were wearing dark coloured bomber jackets with hoods.

Police are appealing to anyone who might have seen the dark blue Shogun car, registration HVV 146, since Sunday evening, or anyone with any further information, to call Bury CID on 0161 8568150.
