Too many bums wear out theatre seats

Actors are hoping to empty Knutsford Little Theatre next month.

They are planning to rip out all the seats ready for new ones, which they hope will make the audience feel more comfortable - and entice new visitors.

"I hope the changes will attract people out of sheer curiosity," said theatre chairman Graham Browne.

The 104 velvet-covered chairs have served the theatre well but too many bums on seats at their successful amateur shows have now taken their toll.

"We've felt for some years now that they have been getting very tatty," said Mr Browne.

The theatre salvaged the purple seats from Knutsford Civic Hall in Toft Road when it became the studio cinema more than 10 years ago.

But the theatre is now offering them to a new home.

"There are still some in a reasonable condition and if anyone wants to make us an offer for them they are welcome to have them," said Mr Browne. "They would suit other small theatre groups or a hall with tatty seats that needs new ones."

All the seats will be removed within days so that volunteers can paint the auditorium before the new ones arrive.

Manchester Airport has donated £2,000 from its Community Trust Fund to help settle the £10,000 bill.

But the theatre will have to raise the rest. "We are putting on more and more shows these days and it shouldn't be a problem but we need the support," said Mr Browne.

The work is due to be finished by the New Year before pantomime Hickory Dickory Dock opens on January 21.

But just 100 tickets will be on sale each night instead of 104.

"We are losing a few seats because we have had to make room at the front for wheelchairs to comply with new disability laws," he said.

If you want some of the old seats - or parts of them - call Mr Browne on 01477 544559. If you would like to make a donation to the theatre please send a cheque - made payable to Knutsford Little Theatre - to John Smith, Knutsford Little Theatre, Queen Street, WA16 6HZ.
