£66,000: You've done us proud

WOMEN of Warrington should stand proud after they managed to break all previous records and raise an incredible £66,000 through sponsorship of this year's Race for Life.

Hundreds of women took part in the Warrington Guardian sponsored event at Walton Hall Gardens in June to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

Last year the Warrington race brought in £51,000 for the charity but thanks to the effort of the 1,000 women who took part in this year's event, the total has smashed previous amounts.

Despite the gruelling five-kilometre run, women turned out in force to show a united front and run in memory of all those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Among the runners was a team of four women from the Warrington Guardian who ran in memory of a former work colleague who died earlier this year.

During the day many emotional stories emerged as the women shared their reasons for completing the race, and spoke of loved ones who had lost their lives to cancer.

Others ran with pride for those who were currently battling cancer, while those who had beaten the disease joined them in putting their best foot forward.

James Dunphy, national events executive at Cancer Research UK, said: "The Warrington race has smashed its sponsorship target with a fantastic £66,000 now raised. This is an excellent achievement and is a significant contribution to the national total, which currently stands at an astonishing £20.8million.

"Thank you all for your support and assistance as this is a brilliant achievement. The money received will make a huge difference to Cancer Research UK's vital research into the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer. Thank you for helping to make a difference."
