Remember the heroes

EVEN busy Bridge Foot fell silent on Sunday as Warrington remembered war heroes past and present.

The service of remembrance, which began at the cenotaph at 11am, was attended by hundreds of people who all wanted to pay their respects to soldiers who have died defending British interests.

It was led by the Mayor of Warrington, Clr Ted Lafferty, himself an ex-serviceman. He said: "People were very good. Car drivers stopped and you could have heard a pin drop during the two minutes of silence."

It was the first time Clr Lafferty has attended the town centre service because he normally goes to the one in Grappenhall, where he is welfare officer for the area's Royal British Legion.

He said: "I was very impressed

with the service's organisation. It was very tastefully done and well attended. Everything went so smoothly and had a bit of class.

"It was also a pleasure to see the young ones looking so smart - all the cadets, Brownies and Scouts were there. It is so important that all of us remember the lads who went to war because without them we wouldn't be here today."

In another show of solidarity with war veterans, parishioners of St Oswald's Church in Winwick refused to be beaten when their poppy box money was stolen. The Rev Bob Lewis ran an extra collection where people gave generously for a second time.
