Below par, but Crewe power was still enough

CREWE and Nantwich RUFC got away with an under-par performance in a 25-10 success at Birchfield.

Without skipper Andreas Reckwerth or vice Danny Potts, a lack of leadership was prevalent as Crewe struggled in trying to break down a stubborn defence, last Saturday.

However it's the result that counts and victory keeps them in the top two promotion spots in South Lancs/Cheshire Division Two.

Exchanges were fairly even in the first half and it was well into the game before Crewe finally opened their account.

Will Potts picked up from a winning five metre scrum and fed winger Andy Thompson who managed to score in the corner.

Danny Lynch added a penalty to give the visitors an 8-0 lead just before the break.

After the restart, Donny Ngatai took a well-timed pass from Harry Harrison to extend Crewe's lead and the power of their forwards began to tell.

Thompson bagged his second try and then completed his hat-trick, crashing over on the opposite wing.

Birchfield showed some spirit to land two tries but Crewe were already out of sight.

Dukinfield are next up, at home this Saturday, KO 2.30pm.

Crewe have been drawn at home to Hessle in the Powergen Junior Vase Fourth Round, on Saturday week.
