Service remembers former headteacher

A THANKSGIVING service has been held to celebrate the life of a former primary school headteacher.

Ray Sharp MBE, the former headteacher of Hartford Manor Primary School, died in September from leukaemia.

Ray, who was born in Cumbria in 1934, taught mathematics and science at Victoria Road Primary School and Partington Primary School and then became head of Hartford Manor in 1972.

He was headteacher at the school for 27 years and was awarded an MBE for services to education in 1997.

He was also a keen cricketer and encouraged others to take up the sport by hosting district school sports at the school.

His ashes were scattered on the beach in Silecroft, Cumbria, near where he was born. The thanksgiving service took place at St John's Parish Church in Hartford on Thursday.
