NANTWICH Town booked their place in round three of the League Challenge Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Congleton on Tuesday night.
First half goals from Paul Rutter and Danny Griggs proved enough to see off a stern challenge from the Bears and secure a tough date at Skelmersdale in January.
On-loan from Stafford, Rutter got them off to a great start at Jackson Avenue when he bagged his eighth goal of the season after just 7 minutes.
Jones levelled on 20 minutes but the Dabbers had the better of the first half and made it count when Griggs was hauled down in the box.
He picked himself up and slotted home the resulting penalty for a 2-1 interval lead.
Congleton threw everything for
ward in the second half but Nantwich held on to progress.
"It was a good win but not a great performance," admitted player manager Steve Davis.
"We looked the better side in the first half but we were hanging on in the second.
"They came at us and made things difficult for us.
"In cup football, it's the result that counts."
Dabbers hero Jimmy Quinn's short stay with the club appears to be over after being appointed as assistant boss at League One outfit Peterborough.
The 44-year-old teams up with old mate Barry Fry having played under him at Posh.
"It's a good opportunity for Jimmy and I think he'll do well there," added Davis.
"He played against Congleton having spent all day at Peterborough and that shows commitment.
"I'm sure he'll keep in touch and may play the odd game for us midweek if he can make it."
Davis is looking to bring in new faces with Steve Jardine on extended leave and Paul Santos about to serve a suspension.
It's another derby this Saturday as they take the short trip to Alsager Town on Saturday.
"They had a good win against Hyde on Tuesday night," continued Davis.
"On their day, they're a decent side and battle for each other.
"If we're not up for it, we'll get beat and it's as simple as that."
