Check scheme to cut down on home falls

A NEW service has been launched to reduce potential hazards in the homes of older people, which might put them at risk from a slip, trip or a fall.

The home safety check scheme includes the fitting of two free smoke detectors and the planning of an escape route in the event of a fire.

It forms part of a number of initiatives run by Warrington Primary Care Trust's Falls Prevention Service.

The new service is being run in partnership with Age Concern, Cheshire Fire Service and Warrington Social Services.

In addition to the fire check, older people will be referred to social services for an assessment with an occupational therapist for possible disability aids or adaptations to help reduce the risk from falls.

*Mary Brimelow, aged 80 of Great Sankey, has suffered three falls and had a home safety check on Tuesday. She also takes part in an exercise programme run by the Falls Service.

The Falls Prevention Service was launched in April this year and so far 108 older people have benefited.

The service launch followed a successful pilot study with 40 people aged 75 and over, all showing improved mobility.

Falls represent the most frequent and serious type of accident to people aged over 65. Up to 14,000 people each year die in the UK as a result of a hip fracture while 50 per cent of older people who fall can no longer live independently.
