Democracy in action at school council

DEMOCRACY has had a boost at a Burtonwood primary school after children were elected to its new council.

St Paul of the Cross held its first ever school council on October 20 and head teacher Andy Cocker is delighted with its progress.

He said: "Every class discusses issues and then council members from each year group take it to the counci.

"I think it's a democratic voice for children in the school, they are an integral part of our community and should be able to voice their contributions in a structured way."

Each year group has elected one girl and one boy to the council. So far problems discussed have included making the cloakrooms bigger and buying playground equipment.
