Community stars are rewarded for efforts

TWO young community stars won accolades at Winwick Parish Council's annual community evening.

The event, held in Winwick's Leisure Centre, is a chance for people who run groups for the benefit of villagers to get together and exchange ideas.

It is also one way the parish council says 'thank you' to all the people who volunteer their time to the community, said chairman of the parish council, John Gordon.

Almost 100 people were invited to the event and Hannah Stewart, aged seven, of Kinross Closs, Cinnamon Brow and Adam Myatt, aged 11, of Myddleton Lane each won £70 in the Youth Good Neighbour Award.

The money was donated by Warrington Borough Council.

Hannah had raised £18 for the Adopt a Whale charity by setting up a stall in her front garden, selling her sweets and even the contents of her Christmas crackers.

Adam was chosen for his hard work with the Winwick carnival committee.

A spokesman for the carnival committee said: "Most lads of Adam's age would, I'm sure, rather spend their time playing with friends or computer games, but Adam willingly committed a great deal of his time to help make Winwick Carnival a success.

"This year due to the bad weather some people pulled out from helping. Adam pitched in with vigour, helped marshal the procession and throughout the day ran around doing whatever was asked of him.

"Again on the Sunday he was there, putting things away and tidying the field. His commitment was outstanding, showing him to be a real dependable member of the community."

This is the second year the parish has run a Youth Good Neighbour award.

John Gordon said: "There are a lot of negative stories about young people and we hope that this award highlights the many good things youngsters do."
