Golden couple Beryl and Bill take marriage step by step

A COUPLE from Longbarn, who are celebrating 50 years of marriage, were brought together by their mutual love of dancing.

Beryl and Bill Williams, of Saffron Close, met in Salford when they used to go dancing at the Devonshire Ball Room.

Mrs Williams, who is 73, said: "A lot of us used to go and we used to pair off, and that was when I met Bill."

The couple were married in 1954 at St James' Church in Higher Broughton in the style of a traditional white wedding.

At the time, Mr Williams was in the Navy and travelled all over the Mediterranean on the Battleship HMS Bangard.

Mr Williams served for two years and subsequently went into the oil industry, spending 10 years working on North Sea oil rigs and five years on and off in the Middle East.

The couple have three children together - Susan, 48, Paul, 47, and Scott, 37 - who, between them, have six children.

Mr Williams, aged 74, thinks the secret of a long and happy marriage is compromise.

He said: "It's basically about give and take, to make up arguments on the same day and not to dwell on things."

They will celebrate their anniversary at a dinner at Paddington House Hotel.
