A DREAM of saving the environment from carbon monoxide fumes is being realised by a Cuddington businessman.
Stephen Whittaker's company Green Routes is launching the UK's first 'green' transport company.
The firm, based in Winnington, is able to provide vehicles fuelled entirely from renewable sources, ensuring more economical and environmentally friendly distribution services.
Four years ago Stephen founded his company Ebony Solutions, which produces bio diesel in bulk.
His e-diesel product is a clean-burning alternative to diesel fuel.
Refined from waste vegetable oils rather than fossil fuels (crude petroleum), it produces no net carbon dioxide emissions.
The company is able to produce 400,000 litres of e-diesel a week to supply existing customers and sustain its own fleet of vehicles.
Stephen's partner in the new venture is Jack McEvoy, former managing director of Grocery Logistics, with more than 20 years experience in the transport industry.
Jack said: "Stephen's the bio-fuel expert and I bring the distribution experience.
"Between us we are developing a genuinely differentiated service - a green transport company which can ensure more economical and ecologically sound deliveries whatever the industry."
The two men first came together in 2000, when Grocery Logistics became the first major transport company to trial e-diesel in a number of its lorries.
When the UK was gripped in a major fuel crisis in September that year, Grocery Logistics was one of only a few companies largely unaffected by the fuel blockades.
Stephen said: "More and more leading companies and organisations are recognising the commercial value of corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes and recycling initiatives."
Jack added: "We are seeking to provide transport services to companies that take their corporate environmental responsibilities very seriously and we intend to prove that ethical business is good business."
