Commission in court over 'heavy-handed' customs haul

THE European Commission is taking the UK Government to court following a series of heavy-handed customs seizures at British ports.

Every year, thousands of British shoppers use their right to shop in the EU and bring home cheap cigarettes and alcohol for private use.

But strict enforcement of the rules has sparked controversy, with many shoppers claiming they are unfairly treated by customs officials.

Chris Davies MEP said: "Britain should enforce excise duty law by clamping down on organised criminals smuggling these goods to resell at a profit.

"But the free movement of goods is a fundamental principle of the EU and ordinary Warrington travellers should not be treated like criminals."
