THIS year Wolves mascot Wolfie is risking scorching his own fur to teach a very important lesson, namely not to mess about with fireworks.
With Guy Fawkes Night fast approaching, the council wants Warrington residents to know that 25 metres, or the distance from the 'dead ball line' to the 20-metre line at the Halliwell Jones stadium, is a safe distance to set fireworks off.
To improve the safety of Warrington residents, there has been a massive clampdown this year on fireworks regulations.
A number of changes in legislation have been made, including the introduction of fixed penalty tickets for those who set off fireworks between 11pm (or midnight on November 5) and 7am, and anyone under 18, who is found in possession of fireworks.
Clr Mike Hannon, executive board member for community and wellbeing, said: "This is a busy time for all relevant agencies and they are working together to protect the safety of Warrington residents."
"I would encourage anyone who has concerns about the use of fireworks to contact either the police or trading standards."
More extensive measures have been taken to ensure fireworks safety. Council staff are giving talks to primary school pupils to warn youngsters of the dangers of fireworks.
Warrington Trading Standards will also be carrying out mystery shopping tests at places suspected of selling fireworks to anyone under 18 years of age.
If you suspect that a local retailer is selling illegally, contact trading standards on 442678.
