Two arrested after stabbing

TWO Crewe residents have been arrested for attempted murder in connection with a stabbing in the West End on Monday afternoon.

The 36-year-old Crewe man was stabbed in the chest at a block of flats at Alexandra Place shortly after 5pm.

Scenes of crime officers sealed off the front entrance to the flats following the attack to enable forensics experts to carry out investigations.

Andrew Molyneux of the Merseyside Regional Ambulance Service said: "On route to the incident paramedics were advised to stand off by the police until they knew it was safe to approach the scene.

"As a consequence of this and the nature of the situation, we put Leighton Hospital on standby."

Leading the investigation, detectives from Crewe CID have been conducting door-to-door enquiries speaking to neighbours and anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Officers responded to a 999 call to Alexandra Place where they found a 36-year-old man with a stab wound to his chest.

"As a result a 33-year-old local man and a 36-year-old local woman have both been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

"The condition of the injured man remains stable and he is currently in Leighton Hospital."

Sue Lock, the chief executive of area's Wulvern Housing, said: "We were shocked to hear of the incident and will do all we can to allay the fears of residents while working closely with police."

At the time of the Guardian going to press no charges had been brought against the man and woman, who have both been released on police bail.
