Third defeat in a row for poor Bears

CONGLETON Town boss Kevin Langley is looking to sign new players to give a much-needed boost to his struggling side.

The Bears have conceded 10 goals in their last three games, the latest defeat being 3-0 at Atherton LR on Saturday.

The reverse followed 3-1 and 4-1 defeats by Alsager Town and St Helens Town, and three draws.

"Our difficulties continued on Saturday, as we failed to make an impression on the home side," said Congleton treasurer Ken Mead.

"In the 90 minutes we failed to make the keeper extend himself.

"At the other end we conceded our tenth goal in three games, during which we have socred just twice.

"We continue to be hampered by injuries and suspensions, and an ever-changing side has not helped our cause."

Mr Mead added that Kevin Langley was hoping to sign new players this week to boost the squad and provide more competition.

Atherton took the lead on 11 minutes when McNair played a one-two on the left.

Three defenders were left to watch as he cut along the goalline before pulling the ball back to Howard, who swept a shot past Broomfield, who was making his debut.

The Bears sought to pull themselves back into the match, but several half chances came to nothing.

Atherton extended their lead when Michael Owen, re-signed from Nantwich Town, saw his clearance hit an Atherton player and rebound to the feet of the unmarked Crompton, who had the easiest of tasks to slot home from eight yards.

The Bears should have drawn level on the stroke of half-time.

Sturridge blocked a pass on the half way line, and the ball ran through towards goal.

Sturridge latched onto the ball, but was over elaborate as he tried to beat a defender and lost possession.

Bears' keeper Broomfield saved twice in the opening minutes of the second half to keep Congleton in the match, first from a free kick and a close range header.

Atherton made it 3-0 on 63 minutes from the penalty spot after Owen had brought down Howard, and Crompton scored his second of the match.

Congleton enjoyed a better spell in the last quarter of an hour, a run by Beasley into the area ending with his shot being blocked.

The ball ran loose to Burns, who also had a shot blocked.

The Bears take on Abbey Home at home tomorrow in the league.
