ONE of the most respected charities in Widnes is facing collapse unless a donor steps in.
Justice and Peace has spent years donating essentials to people at the bottom rung of society.
Only last week it found bedding for a single mum because her Widnes council house was so empty her child had to sleep in a discarded crisp box.
But its funding from Halton Council has been cut by 60 per cent and they are only in operation one day a week instead of five.
John from Justice and Peace said: "We have had lots of support from the public but we are desperately in need of a backer at the moment. Clients are still coming through but there's nothing we can do for them."
They need the money to pay rents for storage, for transporting donations and for such simple things as washing clothes before they pass them on.
Former councillor and ex-policeman Maurice Craig, who does volunteer work for Justice and Peace, said: "I am amazed they are keeping going, they seem to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.
"To be quite truthful, I have given donations just to try and keep them going and I know other people have done the same."
He added: "People who are at the bottom of society often get the least help and are also least able to stand up for themselves.
"Justice and Peace act as a safety net and when somebody hits the bottom and they need somebody to show some concern and help, Justice and Peace actually do it.
"They are there to fight the corner of people who can't defend themselves.
"And in my opinion and most people that I know would agree, they are of the most respected and trusted organisations in the town."
