Hornets U9s

Haresfinch U9s 4

Halton Farnworth Hornets U9s 48

THE Hornets got off to a great start, Lloyd Hankin's run enabling Luke Farrell to score a fine try.

Haresfinch came straight back and despite Daniel Pierce, Callum Campbell and Jordan Maddocks's hard work, the Hornets' line was overwhelmed.

From the play-the-ball Matty Fozard broke away to take the lead once more.

Haresfinch again tried to force their way forward, but solid challenges from Sam Osbourne and Joe Kelly and great covering tackles from Kieran Topping forced the handover.

Farrell crashed through for another four points.

Haresfinch looked certain to score but Hornets managed to rush the opposing player into touch just short of their own line.

Tom Walters hurled himself down the field and it took five players to eventually bring him down. Hankin finished the job.

Hard-hitting tackles from Maddocks, Pierce and Campbell denied Haresfinch.

Kyle Smith picked up the next points after a determined run.

Fozard then intercepted a long pass and put the ball down at the opposite end as the Hornets took a 20-point lead into the interval.

A fantastic tackle from Topping brought an attack to a stop two yards short of the Hornets' line.

Driving runs from Osbourne and Ben Laughton gained a lot of ground before Farrell's pass saw Fozard cross the line.

Adam Murphy picked up a loose ball and ran almost the length of the pitch before being intercepted.

From the play, Sam McGrory broke and was unlucky to hit the line on his back following a big hit from the opposition.

Hornets increased the pressure, Stuart Johnson reaching over from beneath a tangle of tacklers.

Minutes later Johnson dropped off Smith to score his second.

The never-say-die home team pushed hard down the field until Murphy intercepted and passed the ball to McGrory, who raced down the pitch to drop off Smith for his third.

Then Johnson picked out McGrory who crashed over.

Haresfinch tried one last drive but Walters and Kelly forced the handover.

Laughton received the ball and raced almost the length of the pitch to score.

Coach's awards went to Daniel Pierce and Tom Walters, top tackler was Matty Fozard and Stuart Johnson was man of the match.
