Moorfield Cricket Club

MOORFIELD CC first XI lost only their second game of the season last week at home to Mawdesley CC.

Moorfield skipper John Eccleshall won the toss and elected to bat and opener Neil Maher knocked a credible 24.

He and South African Sean van Veenstra (21) and Rob Yearsley (29) were the only Moorfield batsmen to score more than 20 runs as Moorfield limped to 131 all out.

In response Mawdesley lost four quick wickets but number three Rob Dickinson (56 not out) held them together assisted by number six Billy Tennant (43).

Four or five dropped catches proved costly for Moorfield as the visitors secured victory with five overs to spare.

Mawdesley 24 points Moorfield 7 points.

Although a disappointing result these points may prove invaluable as the Widnes side gained points on the two teams above them in the league whose games were rained off.

Moorfield second XI figured much better away at Tranmere Vics.

Skipper Tony Harrison won the toss and decided to bat.

Only Andy Paton (17) and Kev McCann (55 not out) made notable scores as the Moorfield innings closed on 101 all out.

In response the Tranmere Vics batsmen were always struggling against the stronger Moorfield bowling attack.

Tony took five for 22 off 12 overs while vice skipper Mike Harrison took three for 20 off seven overs.

Dave Sefton chipped in with two for nine as Tranmere Vics collapsed to 55 all out giving Moorfield a vital win.

Tranmere Vics 4 points Moorfield 24 points.

Meanwhile the third XI continued to develop under the tutelage of skipper Ste Dean.

In a home fixture against MOB (Manchester Olympic Bid 1988), the visitors won the toss and batted.

They reached 143 for eight off their 40 overs.

Pick of the Moorfield bowlers was Neil Baxter bowling leg spin.

Neil took two for eight off six overs as he got some good turn and bounce.

Ste was well supported by some good fielding with three good run outs accounting for three of the visitor's wickets.

In response the Moorfield batsmen paced their run chase to perfection.

Star man was Tom Lunt with 65 not out, an excellent performance from the 15-year-old.

Tom was supported by Danny Paton (25) and Ste Dean (34) which saw Moorfield score 147 for five with three overs remaining to secure victory.

Next week sees the first XI at home against Cheshire Lines CC and the second XI away at Wavertree CC.

Sunday sees the first XI travel to Manweb CC in the quarter final of the David Kaufman Trophy. Nets continue on Thursday with selection to follow.
