Police crack down on car thieves

VALE Royal police have vowed to move up a gear in their fight against car thieves in Witton.

But they are calling for help from the public following a spate of car thefts and break-ins this month.

Two cars have been stolen, 11 were broken into and two were tampered with during the first two weeks of June.

Car stereos have been the main target and police believe the culprits have been trying to sell the stolen goods door-to-door.

Inspector Brian Roberts said this type of car crime would not be tolerated.

He said: "We've got officers doing extra patrols in key places at key times and are confident we can put a stop to these crimes, which can make people's lives a misery.

"The damage caused to cars often costs more to repair than the value of the items that are stolen."

He said having a car stolen was also a very upsetting experience.

Liz Biddle, Home WATCH officer for Congleton and Vale Royal, said everyone in the community could help out by keeping their eyes and ears open.

She said: "An unfamiliar car parked in the street, a stranger loitering about, a knock at the door out of the blue from someone selling stereos - anything that raises suspicion should be shared with neighbours and the police."

Increased patrols and close contact with residents in Witton will continue for the foreseeable future.

Anyone with information about car crime in the area should contact Northwich police station on 01606 48000.
