KNUTSFORD MEP Chris Davis has been elected leader of Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament.

On Monday Mr Davies, 49, said he wanted to lead the argument for adopting the controversial EU Constitution.

"We have experience and greater influence and I want to ensure that we use this to shape and sometimes challenge new EU laws," he said.

Mr Davis was re-elected on June 10 and was joined by Eurosceptic Dr John Whittaker of the UK Independence Party.

He said UKIP's strong showing in the ballot - in which they pushed the Liberal Democrats into fourth place nationally - was a message to Prime Minister Tony Blair.
