WARRINGTON residents are now recycling more than eight per cent of their household waste, a survey says.
Research carried out by Britain's General Union (GMB) revealed a figure of 8.2 per cent.
This puts the town above the national average, and well above local authorities such as Liverpool (1.9 per cent) and Manchester (4.3 per cent).
But our neighbours in Halton are recycling an impressive 10.9 per cent of their household waste.
Out of 43 north west local authorities, Warrington was ranked 18th.
Phil Woods, environmental protection and waste manager at Warrington Borough Council, said: "I am very pleased that we are ranked so highly within the north west.
"Recycling is highly important to us in Warrington and is at the top of our waste agenda, along with minimisation of waste.
"I would like to thank the waste team for all their hard work and support and we aim to achieve an even higher position in the future."
You can recycle at Gatewarth Recycling and Household Waste Centre (RHWC), off Barnard Street in Sankey Bridges, Woolston RHWC, in New Cut Lane, and Stockton Heath RHWC, in Sandy Lane.
The blue bin paper recycling scheme is also to be rolled out across town.
Justin Bowden, senior GMB public services officer, said: "We can all make a significant contribution to the environmental sustainability of our economy by upping the recycling game."
