Where were the rest of our councillors?

AS a veteran of Cyprus and Aden, I was proud to march with the veterans of the D-Day landings to mark its 60th Anniversary.

I was disgusted with the lack of respect given to these brave men by St Helens Council. At the cenotaph in St Helens there was no PA system, which made it very hard to hear the service (especially as some of us are a little hard of hearing), and I just could not believe my eyes to see the police actually allowing buses to drive past the cenotaph during the two minutes silence.

There was very little traffic on the roads at this time, but the police found it necessary to sound their sirens while speeding through the town.

St Helens Council couldn't even be bothered to raise the flag in memory of the lads who made the supreme sacrifice for our to-days. (If our boys didn't deserve the respect of having the flag raised surely the death of ex President Reagan warranted the flag to be raised to half-mast?).

At the service the next lady mayoress laid a wreath and she was accompanied by the leader of the council but where were the rest of the councillors? Did they all forget it was D-Day? WE WILL REMEMBER.

The veterans of the wars will always remember our comrades who made the supreme sacrifice, and we will also remember the lack of respect shown by St Helens.
