Fate of sixth form in hands of councillors

A DECISION on the future of Newton High School's sixth form was made by St Helens Council's executive board yesterday, as the Newton and Golborne Guardian went to press.

The meeting on Wednesday evening followed three months of consultation with staff and students, although only one e-mail, one letter, one petition and 11 consultation forms were sent to the council.

People's main worries about closing the sixth form were its timing, a reduction in choice and the negative impact on student aspirations and staff morale.

Concerns were also expressed about the ability of St Aelred's to cope with additional students and the fact that only Catholic sixth form provision would be on offer in Newton.

A spokesman said: "Although a number of important points were raised during the consultation the extent of the challenge that the school will face in addressing issues highlighted in the report is such that the recommendation is to close the sixth form from August 31."

Raising standards in Newton High, concerns about the quality of education for A-level students and the small size of the sixth form are the three main reasons for closure, said St Helens Council.
