Don't shed tears after a break-in

POLICE in Winsford have urged residents to put security first after a spate of shed break-ins in the town last week.

Officers were busy after more than 13 sheds and garages were targeted in the first three days of June. Thieves made off with strimmers, lawnmowers, bicycles and sports equipment.

Peter Kenny, crime reduction officer for Vale Royal, said the contents taken in raids often added up to hundreds of pounds. He said: "Garden sheds are a very popular target with burglars and are often overlooked when security is being considered. It's wise to secure the shed door with at least one heavy duty hasp and closed-shackle padlock.

"Evidence collected by the police shows windows and roofs are often used as an access route by thieves. Mr Kenny added: "All opening windows require good window locks. In addition to fitting security devices outside, it's worth considering installing an alarm. If a house already has an installation, it may be possible for it to be extended to the shed."

Mike Kennedy, chairman of Grange Estate Residents' Association, said: "With all the reports over the past few years about thefts I've certainly got a padlock on my shed. A lot of people have got expensive equipment in outhouses and sheds and they may not be insured for the contents inside."
