Energy watchdog says bills are too high

RESIDENTS in Crewe and Nantwich are paying as much as £65-a-year too much for their gas and electricity according to an energy watchdog.

Official figures announced last week by Energywatch North West revealed 'loyal' residents who have not switched from their original suppliers are being overcharged.

Those residents in the Manweb area who have not switched from their original gas supplier British Gas, are paying as much as £31 too much.

The report by energy regulator Ofgem, found that Scottish Power was charging £34 more than many local competitors and comes as the supplier revealed its profits had increased to £101million.

Gas and electricity watchdog Energywatch North West welcomed the report and slammed suppliers for targeting loyal customers.

Regional director David Sidebottom said: "Charging those consumers who have stayed is an odd way to reward consumer loyalty.

"Consumers need to think about whether they are happy with paying more.

"If they are not, they should take a look at their energy bills and see if they can switch and save.

"Scottish Power has consistently said they must raise prices as wholesale prices have increased. But the only thing we know for sure today is that consumers and city analysts have seen UK profits soar to £101million.

"One group may well be pleased with bumper profits - but we are less convinced that this is good news for their loyal customers."

A Scottish Power spokesman said: "All electricity companies face the same issue because of how the market has developed.

"We encourage all customers to look for the best deal, for example dual fuel, direct debit, internet payments and so on.

"A good price and customer service is why we have gained customers in the last year - we have more than 200,000 'returnees' and now have 4.25 million customers, so clearly we do something right."
