ANY initiatives that may help to promote literacy among the young are to be applauded and in his new series collectively titled The Team, children's author David Bedford is penning some splendid little books each with a football theme.

In The Football Machine, Harvey's team are the whipping boys and so Professor Gertie comes up with Mark I, a robot programmed to score goals. In Top of the League the young heroes need just one more point to win the league when Darren the goalie fumbles an easy shot to concede a goal.
